Safe railways for Australia

Current reviews

Currently the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) is undertaking a number of reviews.  These include:

Review of fatigue risk management arrangements under the Rail Safety National Law

In May 2015, Ministerial Council approved the scope of the review of the legislative framework for fatigue risk management, with a view to achieving nationally consistent legislation. ONRSR will commence research into appropriate regulatory frameworks for managing fatigue risk and will engage with stakeholders through both a reference group, and broader consultation with industry, unions and governments.

The reference group has agreed to its terms of reference.

Review of the legislative framework for drug and alcohol management

The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) is progressing its review of the legislative framework for drug and alcohol management with a view to achieving nationally consistent legislation.

Following Ministerial Council approval of the scope of the review in November 2014, ONRSR is undertaking research and analysis into appropriate regulatory frameworks and has commenced engagement with stakeholders from industry, government and unions through a drug and alcohol reference group.

The reference group met for the first time in August 2015 and will meet approximately twice a year to consider all aspects required under the scope of the review. The reference group has agreed to its terms of reference.

Further consultation with stakeholders will follow before recommendations are submitted to Ministerial Council in 2017.
