ONRSR has responsibility for regulatory oversight of rail safety in every Australian state and territory, to promote and improve national rail safety and ensure the safety of the community.
ONRSR independently administers the Rail Safety National Law and performs the functions and responsibilities, and exercises the powers conferred upon it by that law on behalf of all state, territory and federal Ministers for Transport and Infrastructure.
The safety of all who come into contact with any part of Australia’s rail network is our key priority. From passengers and employees, contractors, business and industry stakeholders, to pedestrians, drivers or neighbouring landowners, we are committed to maintaining and improving safety at every touchpoint.
Under a uniform and unified regulatory framework, we help ensure that stakeholder responsibilities are easier to understand and fulfil; information and guidance on rail safety is consistent; red tape is reduced; and ultimately, greater efficiencies can be enjoyed across the entire sector.
We work to bring about legislative uniformity in order to reduce the costs, administrative burden and any uncertainty that operators face working across state and territory borders.
Through the judicious use of its enforcement powers, ONRSR plays a key role in reducing safety risks by conducting audits, reviews and investigations, and by applying a range of outcomes from the provision of advice to the issuing of notices, suspensions of accreditation, and prosecution.
The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR)’s Statement of Intent 2020-2023 outlines ONRSR’s regulatory approach and priorities, which underpin ONRSR’s business and resource allocations.
