National Priorities review

Every two years ONRSR reviews its national priorities, those areas of regulatory focus that apply to multiple jurisdictions and operators and warrant a sustained period of regulatory attention.

The priority areas are targeted using tailored regulatory treatments, typically through operator-centric national compliance projects or industry-wide safety improvement projects. The current suite of national priorities comprises Track Worker Safety, Level Crossing Safety, Control Assurance and Contractor Management.

ONRSR applies a structured, evidence-based risk assessment process to review and set its national priorities. The internal review may retain, recast or refine the existing priorities or identify a completely new set. In doing so it will consider a range of factors and resources to determine a revised set of priorities including:

  • ATSB investigation reports
  • REPCON reports
  • Notifiable occurrence reports
  • Operator safety performance reports
  • Review of regulatory interactions
  • Regulatory intelligence
  • Stakeholder forums and consultation

ONRSR will announce its new set of national priorities later this year.
