Safety Alert follow up - ASQA

Following the release of an ONRSR safety alert the Australian Skills Quality Authority is now investigating technical training providers who are registered training organisations delivering rail worker industry competencies.

ONRSR Chief Operating Officer, Peter Doggett said that by working with ASQA (the national regulator for the vocational education and training sector) as early as possible, ONRSR can remain focussed on addressing rail safety concerns.

“We will continue to work with rail transport operators and act where necessary to ensure safety management systems have not been compromised or if there is an imminent risk to rail operations through unsafe practices on the network,” he said.

“ASQA is the appropriate authority to investigate issues around the quality and integrity of training and assessment delivered by registered training organisations.”

“It’s a good example of ONRSR working collaboratively with another national regulator.”

ASQA also has a ‘tip-off’ hotline for information relating to fraud and other threats to the integrity of the vocational education and training (VET) sector. Full details are available at www.asqa.gov.au

ONRSR issued the Safety Alert on 15 December last year to highlight concerns with two organisations and the manner in which they issued safeworking competencies.
