Uncontrolled train movements can lead to collisions with other trains, derailments, or accidents at level crossings, all of which can cause fatalities or severe injuries to crew, passengers, and the public. These incidents can also present a danger to railway workers: maintenance crews or staff working near tracks are at serious risk if a runaway occurs without warning.
