Training for an emergency situation is important so that it becomes routine, as much as possible.
A rail transport operator’s ability to deal with an emergency will only be as good as its planning and training.
Recently ONRSR has seen examples of how a lack of preparedness can make an already very dangerous situation potentially much worse, particularly where the person on the end of the emergency call was unprepared for the situation at hand.
While not every circumstance in an operational environment is necessarily foreseeable, RTOs are required under Rail Safety National Law to have, within their safety management system, “evidence of identification of all emergencies that could arise.” Such information needs to part of a comprehensive Emergency Management Plan designed to prepare for emergencies and provide clarity for all involved in order to manage the situation as best they can.
